Ventura County sits between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, with 840,000 residents in ten cities and large agricultural areas. The US-101 is the spine, running from Thousand Oaks over the Conejo Grade to Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura; the SR-118 serves Simi Valley and Moorpark; the SR-126 connects Santa Paula and Fillmore to Santa Clarita; the SR-23 links Thousand Oaks and Moorpark; and the SR-1 and SR-33 run along the coast and into the Ojai Valley. The county’s crashes mix long-distance commuters on the 101, farm and truck traffic on the Oxnard Plain, and rural two-lane highways in the Santa Clara River Valley.
Five cities contract with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office; the others have their own police departments. The county has a single Level II trauma center. This page covers the county-wide picture and links to the Oxnard city page, with notes on Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley and Ventura.

Injury lawsuits are filed in the Superior Court of California, County of Ventura, at the Hall of Justice in Ventura; the Simi Valley courthouse handles limited matters for the east county. Government claims against the county go to the Clerk of the Board; against a city, to that city clerk; against Gold Coast Transit, to the district.

Collision patterns in Ventura County
Conejo Grade and US-101 crashes
The 7% grade between Thousand Oaks and Camarillo is a recurring site of truck runaway, rear-end and high-speed collisions, and the US-101 through Oxnard and Ventura has frequent congestion crashes. See freeway accidents and truck accidents.
Agricultural and farmworker traffic
The Oxnard Plain’s farm roads—Hueneme Road, Rice Avenue, Rose Avenue, Las Posas Road—mix slow farm equipment, labor vans and trucks with commuters. The Rice Avenue/Fifth Street rail crossing was the site of the 2015 Metrolink derailment and remains a grade-separation project.
Two-lane highway crashes
The SR-126, SR-33, SR-150 and SR-23 north of Moorpark are rural two-lane routes with head-on and run-off-road crashes. See head-on collisions.
Coastal and PCH collisions
The SR-1 from Point Mugu to Oxnard and the US-101 through Ventura carry beach traffic, cyclists and motorcyclists. See motorcycle accidents and bicycle accidents.
Pedestrian collisions in Oxnard
Oxnard records the county’s highest pedestrian injury counts, concentrated on Oxnard Boulevard, Saviers Road and Ventura Road. See pedestrian accidents and the Oxnard city page.
